How To Fill a 10 Day Peru Vacation

Author: Gary Sargent - Escaped to Peru / Escaped to Latin America

Ok, you’re committed to a Peru vacation. Maybe you’ve heard that the country is un-missable (it is) or that you’ll have an incredible time there (you will).

Those are the motivations...what about the details? Peru is a really diverse country with so many different climates, activities, destinations...urrgh..?! To pick what is really best for you, here are some suggestions to pick through the overwhelming range of options and fill your 10 days in the best way possible.

Step One: Think of your budget
This is going to define everything else, so best to get it straight now. You may want to go 5 star all the way, but can you afford it?

Work out a total amount that you have to spend, either with or without your international flight costs. This will help you define where you stay, how much you move around and what you get up to. Hotels, tours and transport all come in different levels of luxury and cost; defining your budget will help you pick your level.

Step Two: Think of activities
What do you want to do on your Peru vacation? The country offers activity tours (hiking, mountain biking, climbing), cultural activities (Lake Titicaca, markets), archaeological tours (Machu Picchu, the Sacred Valley, the Nazca Lines), and wildlife tours (the Amazon Rainforest) to name but a few options. Match your interests to your destination and you’ll have a fulfilling 10 days. Don’t worry about not finding something in Peru, the country really does have options for everyone!

Step Three: Think of destinations
Have you heard of a particular place that you’d like to visit in Peru? Perhaps the White City of Arequipa, the Inca Citadel of Machu Picchu, the “poor man’s Galapagos” of Islas Ballestas, or Lake Titicaca?

Try to figure out where the destinations are on a map of Peru; besides being fun, it can give you a realistic idea of the amount of time you will need to spend travelling to visit these places. Peru is a big country and you can end up spending more time on the road than enjoying what it has to offer if you are not careful in your planning.

Sometimes you can also combine destinations outside Peru on a 10 day trip. The Galapagos Islands and Iguazu Falls are easily combined with a Peru tour.

Step Four: Will you take a custom tour or group tour?
Are you travelling with your family, in a group, or solo? These factors can affect your choice of tour provider. If you want to visit popular sites, stick to a fixed and fairly inflexible schedule and benefit from lower costs, a group tour could be the best thing for you. If you want more control over your itinerary and flexibility, consider a custom designed tour; ideally the best option for travelling families.

Step Five: Research
Now the best part - with these things in mind, why not get someone else to help do the research! Contact a tour operator and let them know your budget, timeframe and preferences. They can provide suggestions to make your 10 day plans realistic and provide you with costs. The whole process is obligation free, so you’ll basically get expert advice planning your Peru vacation.

Result? A 10 day Peru vacation, just the way you want it. Enjoy!
