Mexico City and Copper Canyon 8 Days

Day 1: Arrival Mexico City

Welcome to Mexico City! After your reception at the airport we will transfer you to your hotel. Mexico City is one of the world´s largest metropolis, it is also the oldest urban centre in the Western Hemisphere. In ancient times Mexico City was known as Tenochtitlan. The Spanish conquistador Hernan Cortes and his men were awestruck by the sight of the imposing temples of the Aztecs. There is a wide range of hotel accomodation in the central historic area of the city, for example the NH Hotel or the Plaza Florencia. Just let us know which standard of hotels you require and we can provide suggestions for you to choose from.

We can recommend the Hotel Regente (4 star) for your stay.

Day 2: Mexico City

Today you will enjoy a full day city tour with a visit to the breathtaking pyramids of Teotihuacan. When Cortes reported back to King Carlos V in Spain he found it difficult to convey the scale of what he was seeing. Imagine the kings surprise at learning that “one of the plazas was twice the size of that of Salamanca”, and “the principal pyramid is taller than the tower of the cathedral at Seville”, or that the stone and wood craftsmanship that adorned these monuments “could nowhere be bettered”. You will be shown some of these sights by your local guide before being dropped off at your hotel.

After a very early call in the morning, you will be transferred to the railway station to begin your adventure! You will board the “Chihuahua-Pacifico” train better known as “Chepe”, which offers beautiful landscapes to the visitors and from Creel on. Your first destination will be Divisadero, overlooking the magnificent Copper Canyon. At your arrival at Creel station, your will be met and transferred to your hotel. In the afternoon you will have free time to explore the area.

We recommend the Hotel "The Lodge at Creel" (4 star) for your stay.

Day 5: Creel – Posada Barrancas

You will have the opportunity during the morning to do short optional excursions (for example Arareko Lake, Tarahumara Caves and San Ignacio Mission). You will then be transferred to Creel train station, and ride to the Posada (Barrancas) station, where you will hop-off the train. A driver will meet you and drive you to your selected hotel which could be the Hotel Posada Barrancas Rancho (4 star).

Day 6: Posada Barrancas – Bahuichivo – Cerocahui

Your morning will be free for discovering the local area or doing one of the optional excursions to a nearby site (for example the Balancing Rock). Then we will transfer you to the train station to ride to Bahuichivo, another station of on the Chepe route. There you will be picked up to take you to the hotel in the old mission community of Cerocahui.

Recommended overnight at the Hotel Mision Cerocahui (4 star).

Day 7: Cerocahui – Bahuichivo –  El Fuerte

During the morning you will have free time to do one of the optional excursions in the area, such as the Urique Canyon excursion, overlooking the deepest point of the Canyon (1,879 m deep). Then, back at the train station, you will continue your ride to El Fuerte town which was an important mining center in the 19th century and now has turned into a preferred region for boutique hotels. Overnight at Hotel Posada del Hidalgo (4 star) or similar.

Day 8: El Fuerte – Los Mochis – Mexico City or beach extension (San Jose de los Cabos or Manzanillo)
