The itinerary that was made for us to include all of the areas that we wanted to visit was excellent, you did a great job in fitting a lot into a 3 week period....... There was no one stand out highlight of our trip as we enjoyed every place we visited and they were all individually exciting and quite different. If we had to pick one it would be a toss up between Easter Island and Machu Picchu. Thank you for all of the organization that went into our trip, we did not have to worry about any aspect other than to turn up at the allotted time and someone would look after every detail for us.
Many Thanks
This newly discovered route to Santa Teresa and then to Machu Picchu covers another stretch of Inca roads. This route offers everything there is to offer on a hike; from amazing views of the Andean mountain chains, to waterfalls, flora and fauna, and last but not least, one of the new wonders of the world - Machu Picchu.
On day 1 there is an early start from Cusco for the drive to to Mollepata where the trek starts. From Mollopata you set off by foot towards CruzPata where you can see the Apurimac river canyon. After lunch the hike continues to Soraypampa. On the way there are views of Humantay snow peak (5902m). Another 4 hours of walking and you arrive at the campsite in Soraypampa (3900m) and observe the magical Apu Salkantay (6271m). Be prepared for a cold first night of camping!
Day 2 starts with the hardest ascent of the trek up to Apacheta pass (4590m). After the breathtaking views of the snow capped Mountain Salkantay (6264m), you can also observe the mountains Humantay and Huayanay, white river, small lakes and moraines. After 5 hours of hiking in the morning, there is a 2-3 hour walk down hill to camp in Chaullay (2920m).
Day 3 starts with an easier 3 hours hike to Uscamayuc, where you enter a high jungle niche called "Ceja de Selva". Lunch is at Wiňaypoq'o, then it’s a 3 hour walk to the last campsite in La Playa (2400m).
Day 4 begins with a hike in the direction of Colpani or Llactapata (2700m) - depending on the group decision. Afterwards you go to the hydroelectric plant (1870m) for lunch. From here you will take the 45minute train to Aguas Calientes (2000m) where you spend the last night in a hotel and have the opportunity to soak in the hot springs.
On the final day you take a bus to Machu Picchu where you will have a guided tour for 2 hours before free time at the site. Finally it´s time to head back to Cusco by train from Aguas Calientes.
The Salkantay trek makes for an excellent alternative to the Classic Inca Trail.
